One to Grow On. . .

WHEN our daughter had a birthday last month she was given the traditional spanking--a stroke for each year plus one to grow on. As the horseplay ended, the phrase "one to grow on" left her alcoholic father in a pensive state. Here, in this annual family ritual, had we not recognized the justification for hope, the foundation of faith, the fulfillment of human life, the natural process of growing?
