Read the Directions

ON a recent day while puttering around home on one of my do-it-yourself projects the phrase "read the directions" came to mind. A reminder of the necessity for following this advice came from my friend Charley, who is the hurry-up type, when he phoned me earlier to tell me he had at last been able to install a new trick screen he had bought for a rear window. "What did you do," I asked, "follow the directions?" He admitted that he finally had to before he got it right.
