And Then the Lights Came on

I WAS in London in the spring of the year following the last world war. It was my first visit in seven years and the emotional impact of the war-battered city was staggering. It was like meeting a well-loved friend, whom one had left strong and lovely with honorable time, and finding her pockmarked, scarred and broken by a near fatal illness.
