Are Alcoholics Reward-Expectant?

"I BELIEVE," said the leader, "we alcoholics can be self-victimized into thinking, consciously or otherwise, that sobriety, of itself, will automatically reward us with other good things in life. From early childhood, all human beings are encouraged and trained to expect rewards for effort. We've been praised and patted for obedience to discipline, good manners, educational advancement, job promotions, spiritual growth and progress in other directions.
