ON AA TERMINOLOGY

THOROUGHLY enjoyed the May issue--especially Uncle Max's letter to Louise. (In Pro and Con). He brings up a point [about AA terminology] we could all keep in mind when speaking as well as writing. At one of our meetings some six months ago a newcomer became a bit confused by our use of the term, "spiritual awakening." He had thought we meant church-going and none of us, in using the term, had thought to explain that it could mean a change in our sense of values or our outlook on life. It made me very conscious of the fact that we AAs sometimes take our special language so much for granted that we fail to qualify meanings for the benefit of those who may be attending their first meeting. Fortunately, this newcomer was not bashful about asking questions, but some people are too shy when first attending meetings.
