Honey Sobers Up
A PILOT STUDY in treating alcoholics, carried out by Dr. Martha Brunner-Orne at the New England Hospital in Boston, working with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, unveils yet another hangover remedy: honey. Alcoholic patients at the hospital were given large quantities of honey at half-hour intervals and doctors noted a definite "sobering up and sedative effect on the patient," according to a report in Coronet. The reaction is explained by the fact that the fruit sugar in honey speeds up alcohol metabolism, thereby reducing the alcohol content in the bloodstream.
