THERE is an ancient Chinese report that Confucius felt disappointment when he consulted the Oracle and got the simple message that this day he would receive the gift of the Grace of Small Things. The Oracle went on to explain that the Grace of Small Things was the warmth of the Sun, but not the Sun; it was the fragrance of the garden, but not the garden; it was the glimpse of beauty, but not Beauty herself. And Confucius went away muttering.
