Booze and song-plugging went hand in hand for this veteran tunesmith until the merry-go-round broke down

IN 1902, at the age of fourteen, I started working as an apprentice printer in a Midwestern city, completing a six-year apprenticeship in four years. Four years of grammar school was the extent of my formal education, but the years in the printing trade gave me a most detailed training in the three R's, as spelling had to be perfect; and an innate desire to know the meaning of words, kept me studying Webster's dictionary. Although my work was typesetting, my knowledge of hidden meanings of words increased each day.
