Ten o'clock scholar

There was a knock at the front door, and I was surprised to find the schoolteacher, a fine gentleman who is a member of AA. He had come to announce church services for the following evening. This doctor friend of mine and I had been drinking for a couple of hours, so we insisted on talking about alcoholism with the schoolteacher. He obliged, and I became extremely interested and requested some literature. I got the AA book and several copies of the Grapevine. When I began to read, I didn't think I was yet an alcoholic; when I finished reading, I knew I was. It frightened me.
