AA and the Navajos

Last Fall, a Navajo from Lybrook had been through Turquoise Lodge in Albuquerque, a rehabilitation center operated by the New Mexico Commission on Alcoholism. He was introduced to AA there. After returning to his home, he contacted our group in Farmington and came to some of our meetings. Andy wanted to stay sober and apparently realized that Twelfth Step work was one way. He knew of many Navajos in his area that needed AA and asked to bring them to our meetings. We decided to set aside one meeting a week to be devoted to the Navajos. Many of them did not speak or understand English very well. Our meetings, therefore, would be devoted to a short talk in English by our regular members and then Andy would translate the talk into Navajo. After a while we would get one or two of the Navajos to talk in their native language and then Andy would translate into English.
