From "Meaning: Antidote to Anxiety

Somewhere out in the future lurks death--the end of ourselves as we know ourselves. To the infantile elements of our personality, each impending change means the end of the present self, as far as the emotionally immature individual is concerned. But change is a necessary corollary to life and growth, a means whereby the individual develops new competencies, defenses, strengths and skills. Change thus affords the opportunity to develop a better and more effective self, the opportunity to postpone the disintegration and destruction of senility and death.
