SOME time back I began to nurture an idea that if I could remain sober as many years as I drank, a cure for alcoholism would come about. I was serious. So serious that I told my close friends about my theory. "Son," one of them said, "this is what we call reservations. It's the kind of thinking that begins pushing the swinging doors open. There can be no reservations."
