What Does "Walk Humbly" Mean?
THE other day I was talking with a friend of mine who is running for public office, and we got to talking about his prospects for winning an election. I asked him if he had confidence that he would win, and he said, "It does not pay to get overconfident in this game. The man who becomes overconfident is likely to fall flat on his face when the time comes for election." Well, this is the kind of tight-rope walking all of us are concerned with, when we try to get away from the old proverb that "Pride goeth before a fall." Just what is this pride that the writers of the proverbs said was fatal? And just what do we mean by walking humbly with your God? It is not always easy to distinguish between the two in the normal course of events.
