A Simple Truth
I have discovered a simple and sad truth about alcohol--it prevents drunkerness. For by intoxication I mean utter self-forgetfulness and happiness and indifference to the world. Alcohol is a depressant. How many times have I seen my gay companions, already flushed with the intoxication of ideas or love, suddenly sobered by a cocktail--the sparkling eye, the divine recklessness chilled, the soaring spirit brought to earth.
