The Slip That Turned Out Sober

Ten years dry--then a beer and a rye<lb Then four years in hell--paved the way to get well

A LITTLE better than four years ago I was driving on the West Side Highway, the tears were streaming down my face and I was filled with tremendous self-pity. I was sure God had forsaken me. I denounced Him audibly and swore that I would never have anything to do with Him again. I had just lost my job--unjustly, I felt. I drove off the West Side Highway and headed for a bar, laid some money on the counter, and asked for a double shot of rye and a beer. This was my first drink after ten years of AA sobriety.
