I AM a doctor of medicine, an alcoholic and a member of AA. I was unable to achieve sobriety until I found AA and only then could I practise medicine with contentment and some small success. Certainly as a physician I was unable to heal myself and the various orthodox medical approaches to the problem of alcoholism were destined to fail in my case, or I failed to respond to them to overcome my compulsion and get better.
