The Anecdote Bin
THIS brings us to another report we might call Around the World with the Gassed Motorist, or, Drunken Driving Penalties in Other Lands. B. L., of New York, tore a page from Automobile News which reveals the following. In Turkey, police drag the potted pilot from behind the wheel, transport him twenty miles and make him walk back to the car. He's usually sober, it is said, by the time he gets there. Rhodesian rummies land in jail (no bail) for a week. In the Australian hinterland, the names of apprehended dypso drivers are published in the paper under the heading, "He's Drunk and in Jail." As for Russia, in fatality cases, the driver is hauled from the car and shot.
