At the time I read "AA Comes of Age" I looked at the pictures before reading the book and stopped short upon seeing the picture of Dr. Shoemaker. For a moment I couldn't place him. Then it hit. He was the man who did the honors in my first marriage in 1946. I stood there at the high-noon ceremony still shaking quite a bit even though I had been taking restoratives for half an hour prior to entering the church. It is idle and futile, I know, to ponder what might have been had that great man gotten to me then, a twenty-six-year-old man already with the morning shakes.
