<emphasis type="bold">Has AA living helped to take fear out of your life?</emphasis> ("Fear Was the Dragon," p. 13)

They say there are things we should be afraid of. It makes sense to drive carefully out of rational fear of accidents. It's funny, but I used to drive drunk all the time, and never gave a thought to the danger of it. At the very same time, I was ridden by fears just as was the author of "Fear Was the Dragon." I had all the nameless, formless kinds. And I had some pretty definite ones: what about the vanishing job, the defunct bank account? I realize now that I was afraid, simply, of life. Booze fended off life for awhile; unfortunately life wouldn't go away entirely, and the booze finally didn't work.
