Distillery prose may sell hooch, but. . .

THE other day I was trapped in a barber shop with nothing to read but the inspirational literature that barbers keep on hand--a collection of defunct magazines. The one I picked up was a slick-paper job, obviously intended for a sophisticated, well-heeled man of the world and hardly appropriate for a shaggy ex-drunk harboring a resentment against the high cost of haircuts.
