The Spirit of the Thing

FOR the beginner, this spiritual business is sometimes a tough nut to crack, even after he has been around for some time. Often he wants no part of it, having become disenchanted with anything that smacks of Holy Joe. We should make an effort to help him dispel this uneasiness. We can explain that he, himself, has a spiritual side, and needs only to let it develop normally. We can convince him that it is inherent in each one of us and lies dormant in him only because he has not tried to awaken it properly. In this way we may help him to understand how the AA program can lead him to a more satisfying way of life which will fortify his sobriety.
