Faith Regained
FOR approximately ten years I was a clergyman. During that time my thinking gradually forced me to abandon belief in a personal God. I know now, but did not realize then, that as my belief in God waned, I substituted myself, by way of sublimation, for a belief in something is essential to human sanity. I voluntarily left the ministry, egotistically assured that this was my only honest course, considering my atheism. My need for belief in something to replace my belief in God and the position of prestige that I had relinquished became acute.
