In the United States and indeed all over the world, concern with the problem of alcoholism the disease intensifies. An ever larger number of research projects are being designed and executed to answer the questions: How many alcoholics are there? What makes someone an alcoholic? What can be done to prevent alcoholism? What are the best ways to treat an alcoholic who turns up for medical or psychiatric care, either in the earlier stages of his journey to Hell, or in the last stages when, for all that matters, he's already there?
