A Gripe: How Many Do We Drive Away?

Another in the Grapevine Sponsorship Series--This one decries a few fond shibboleths

SOME time ago, a psychiatrist in a small college town telephoned the local AA group asking help for one of his patients. The patient, a full professor in the university, had agreed to try AA; everything else had failed. The doctor suggested to the lady who answered that AA send someone who had something other than alcoholism in common with the sick professor. He hoped it could be someone who had attended the college or, better still, was an AA faculty member if one was available. He told her that his patient had become extremely sensitive and withdrawn; it was for this reason that he asked for a special sponsor.
