THE chances are good, if you're a steady reader of newspapers and magazines, that you've seen a large number of advertisements for self-improvement books. These publications, it is often claimed in the ads, will help you to easy victory over a range of problems as diverse as bad grammar, vocational failure, or the inability to win friends.
