Conscience

It was ten or eleven years ago that conscience began prodding and nagging at my mind trying to tell me that something was wrong. I listened a little but not enough to find out what to do. Conscience told me that I was drinking much more than I should. Conscience told me to cut down. I listened enough to switch from bourbon to sherry to ale to beer and back to bourbon. Then the axe fell and life seemed intolerable. Conscience finally drove me to my doctor; this small attention I gave to conscience was just enough to make the difference. Sick in mind and spirit I was finally willing to listen to another and take direction. My doctor sent me to AA; I shall be forever grateful. That was nine years ago.
