What is this thing called Love, and what does it mean to a defeated alcoholic?
WHEN I came to AA--sick, disgusted, hating myself and the world around me--the one word I understood least and which nauseated me most was love. I didn't know what it meant. I had it confused with motels--or the Hollywood sexy magazine concept. Probably the worst inventions of the middle ages, I thought, were romantic love and gunpowder. I'd listen to these AA addicts fanatically talk about how we love one another. I didn't know what they meant--but I learned.
