Dead-Letter Anonymity

Being anonymous is all very well, but when do you overdo it? Lately we've heard some interesting discussions among AAs on "overdoing it," mostly centering on this idea: If we are never known to be in AA by anyone who is not in AA, we cut down the chances that a nonalcoholic associate can, with our permission, tell an alcoholic in deep trouble: "Do you know my friend X, he's in AA and I'm sure he'd be glad to talk with you. . . ."
