Carrying the Message

These things remind us

Not long ago I was up very early, when it was yet dark, drinking coffee and thinking pleasantly of the day just past. It had been a good day, holding many trivial but amusing things. I had painted the walls of my kitchen, which now looked lovely. I had found two perfectly wearable dresses which I had forgotten about. My team had won a ball-game, and my favorite player had hit a homer to do it! All in all, it had been a most satisfactory day! As I sat peacefully gloating over my coffee, grateful for these little doings, I heard fire engines coming my way. I confess to being something of a "fire buff," so my first reaction was "Hey, hey! I can watch them go whooping by in the dark--all red and gold and exciting!"
