Sense and nonsense on the road to recovery

THE SEPTEMBER Grapevine noted that, in 1965, our citizenry consumed 293,000,000 gallons of hooch worth $7 billion. Like the U.S. budget's, these are pinball numbers and totally beyond the grasp of ordinary mortals. To make these figures more easily understood, we sharpened our trusty pencil and came up with a number of comparisons. Among the easier were: Our national defense bill is only ten times our bar tab, and it would take eleven super-supertankers to carry all that sauce.
