Personal Opinion - '10:30 P.M. Summer'

Many moviegoers seeing "10:30 P. M. Summer" may be puzzled at the behavior of the distraught heroine (Melina Mercouri, again working with her "Never on Sunday'' director, Jules Dassin). She identifies and allies herself with a fugitive from the law; she maneuvers her husband into another woman's arms. Why? It seemed to me an answer emerged as this AA moviegoer watched the growing trail of empty bottles left by this thirsty tourist in Spain. The woman's actions became plausible to me if they are seen as rooted in the alcoholic's classic sense of guilt; if we understand she feels herself an outcast, deserving punishment.
