I Was a Podium Grabber

A member talks about the compulsion to use meetings for self-projection and how she has dealt with it

IT is a constant temptation for me to use the AA podium to enhance my own image. What a marvelous opportunity to tell my side of an issue. What a thrill to throw in a few choice barbs and cite a few examples while I have a captive audience. I seem to think I can stand before a group and say anything I please and be forgiven by those who truly practice the program, assuming they cannot afford to resent me. With very little effort I can forget the story of what I used to be like and give vent to some current personal debate, thereby giving the whole world a very vivid picture of what I am really like now. The pitiful part is to realize I fool only myself. It is impossible to hoodwink a roomful of AA members!
