First Steps Out of Agnosticism

He had failed himself as his own god; now where should he look for meaning?

I NEVER actually said, "There is no God," but I once had a healthy suspicion there wasn't one. An early preoccupation with spiritual matters had led me through a youth filled with argument about the "right" organized religion into a period when I thought I had found "the one and only true faith," and then to a last stage--the empty loneliness of agnosticism.
