My Name Is Balkissoon

An alcoholic's own story

MY NAME is Balkissoon R. and I am an alcoholic. I have been drinking for about eighteen long years. My first drunk was on a Saturday in the year 1949, when I got away from an accident. I stayed sober for about one year after that, but I went back to drinking, and it became worse and worse all the time, which caused me to do many wrong things in life. Here are some of the wrongs that I have done. First, I neglected my job on three occasions. Second, I used to run at my wife and children with cutlasses, knives, razors, hatchets, bottles, and stones. Third, I burnt my children's and wife's clothes for no reason whatsoever, which caused me to have a broken home. Fourth, I sold my house for eighteen dollars and came to Tobago in search of my wife and children and--most important--work, because I had very little money.
