Rehabilitation Costs Money

Vocational rehabilitation of the alcoholic is expensive. In 1961, [Louisiana] VRA [Vocational Rehabilitation Administration] reported a total of 372 alcoholics rehabilitated at a cost of $260,000; this is an average of $698 per rehabilitation. In 1966, 1,500 alcoholics were rehabilitated at a cost of $1.5 million, or $1,000 per client. It can be seen that the cost has increased even faster than the cost of inflation. This process does not follow the economic law that the larger the number of persons rehabilitated, the less they cost per rehabilitation.
