Uisge History
The big breakthrough came in the 16th Century when the Celts began turning out a heady beverage they called usquebaugh, pronounced wis-ge-baugh and meaning in Gaelic "water of life." Later, this was shortened to uisge, then Anglicized to whisky, without, it should be noted, changing the word's happy connotation.
