Recollections of a Blackout

The city editor said, "Do a rewrite on the Pope's death." It was news to him the Pope had died. . .

DURING forty-odd years (and mostly they were odd) before I came into AA, I never associated the word "blackout" with drinking. When I had a lapse of memory in my twenties or thirties I used to call it a blank. "I drew a blank last night," I would say proudly. It marked me as something special. Neophyte drinkers, when they took too much, "passed out." I, and my gang, the elite, drew blanks.
