QUITE early in my working career--I think when I was about sixteen--an older man, whose material success led me to regard him as the source of all wisdom, advised me that the sure road to success in life was to draw up a list of objectives and then pursue them relentlessly. He neglected to suggest to me what the list should contain, so, with the brash self-confidence of youth, I proceeded to draw up my own list.
