Chance Encounter. . .

She had to drink her way through a war and across an ocean before it occurred

THERE were blue skies over villages and green fields of Southern England. British pilots were engaged in combat high up, and one could hear their far-off zooming from the garden where, when I was eighteen, I attended a cocktail party for army officers and blithe young people. There white-covered tables on the lawns, bearing trays of sparkling iced drinks and cocktails.
