A long-time (nonalcoholic) friend of AA examines the saying "Only an alcoholic can help an alcoholic

THE SAYING "Only an alcoholic can help an alcoholic" is a myth. It is a myth as the word is used in theology, not as it is used in popular language. In popular language, a myth is simply a falsehood. In theology, a myth is a belief (or a story or a description of an event) which is literally false, but contains a spiritual truth.
