Coming of Age in Sobriety

The young dentist had success, family, recognition: everything he needed except. . .

IN MARCH of 1961, I was twenty-eight years old. I had been elected president of a civic club. I was a deacon and a Sunday-school teacher. I had a lovely wife and three children. I had just begun a dental practice in a beautiful new office. I had completed a three-year tour in the Navy. My wife was in the Junior League, and I was on the board of directors of the local center for the mentally retarded.
