Once Over Lightly

Sense and nonsense on the road to recovery

THAT brings us to a point where we really ought to tell a tale on ourselves. One of our big scenes, just prior to AA, was to go to our East Side pad (a disaster area, in fact), relax in an easy chair (after carefully placing a cushion over the spring sticking up through the upholstery), uncork a jug of excellent aged wine (the five-day-old finest), and read a good book. We impressed heck out of ourselves with our erudition and man-of-the-world poise--until one evening, when we reached page 50 of a truly wonderful book, we noted that the page number was at the top and was printed upside down. We thought this was very odd indeed, until it was dimly perceived that the whole book was upside down.
