There was no AA in the Mexican state where she had gone. . .and her sobriety was saved only when she acted out her responsibility to others

I WAS LIKE most drunks: The only responsibility I'd ever really felt was to myself. My needs, my desires, my life, and the devil take the hindmost! He did. In the last sodden years of my drinking, my only concern was my bottle, for it solved all my problems with a blackout starting early every evening--my private trip to my own personal hell.
