Too Humble to Be Grateful

I was afraid to let other people see what I was really like inside. . .

COMING into AA, I sincerely thought that I was the humblest person ever to arrive on the scene. For months, in keeping with my great humility, I would silently sit in the clubhouse coffee room and listen to the talkative ones. These big talkers seemed to have about the same amount of brief sobriety that I had attained; some, a little more or less. They would loudly and confidently describe their past great accomplishments, supreme knowledge of life, and fantasies yet to be realized. Sinking deeper into the well-padded chair, I would think critically, "Thank God, I'm not like them. At least, I'm humble!"
