Backing into a Miracle

I HAD GROWN weary of apologizing, of humiliations, of shame, and of the mountainous burden of guilt that drove me to despondency. For years, I had been on the run, seeking to escape the monster that clung as stubbornly as my shadow. Each spree would eclipse the previous episode, the madness spiraling to new heights, the agony of the hangovers beggaring description.
