The earliest written record of a total solar eclipse comes from China. Two royal astronomers of the court, Hi and Ho, knew that an eclipse was due. Unfortunately, on the day of the eclipse (Oct. 22, 2137 B.C.) Hi and Ho were out partaking of strong spirits, and the eclipse occurred while they were too drunk to perform the usual rites of beating drums and shooting arrows at the sun to ward off the evil dragon devouring it. Hi and Ho, as a result, lost their heads.
