Writing to Ann Landers in the Miami (Fla.) Herald, the embittered widow of an alcoholic reproved the columnist for her usual counsel of compassion toward alcoholics. "I had tried kindness and compassion," the widow said. "It didn't work. I begged him to go to AA and even offered to go with him. He refused. . . . If I had it to do over. I'd have thrown him out and let the sot sink or swim."
