Around AA - Items of AA Information and Experience

Islands Aren't Always Isolated

On Canada's Pelee Island, near the western end of Lake Erie, there's a unique AA group. Bud M., of Akron, Ohio, sends us the story of its origin: "Bill, a Canadian sea captain, was the first AA on Pelee, and remained a Loner for a few years, though he wanted to have AA on the island. Then a Pelee minister, to encourage better feelings towards AA, approached the AA people of Leamington, Ont., for help. In 1957, they began going to the island and getting together with Bill. In 1958, an Ohioan named Joe went to Pelee, and Bill became his sponsor. Now Joe and four other AAs from the States have summer cabins on the island. Every Thursday, a small meeting is held on the eastern shore."
