About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

Pilot Program for Nurses and Social Workers

A unique experiment aimed ultimately at improving and expanding treatment for alcoholics all over the country took place in April and May at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston. With a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health's Division of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the pilot program recruited and trained 10 nurses and 10 social workers. In most cases, they came from key positions--administration, supervision, research, teaching--in agencies which see people with alcohol-related problems. They were expected to take their new knowledge back to their work in family, child-welfare, and community mental-health agencies, hospitals, mental-health clinics attached to courts, social service within schools, schools of social work, and industrial nursing.
