About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

Alcohol and Violence Overseas

Alcoholism in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland is associated with nearly 80% of the crimes, including 50% of the murders. On the other hand, suicide rates among Highland alcoholics are half the national rate. The patterns of alcoholism in this area were described by Dr. Martin M. Whittet, physician superintendent of Crain Dunain Hospital, Inverness, to the International Conference on Alcohol and Alcoholism, held in Glasgow. Dr. Whittet's report was based on a continuing epidemiological study of alcoholism begun in 1967.
